Learn to Speak English with More Confidence

You’re just seconds away from the expert resources you need to learn more words, speak with confidence, and understand English at full speed.

Does this sound familiar?

  • You studied English in school, but the teaching quality was poor and you forgot a lot of what you learned…
  • You need to speak better English to advance in your career or study abroad….
  • You’ve tried the apps and YouTube videos, but are ready for something more serious….
  • You lived or studied in an English-speaking country and want to re-connect with English...
  • You know a lot of English words, but when you try to speak, you lose confidence or forget the words…
  • You understand written English, but get lost when natives speak at full speed…
  • You want to take classes, but you really need resources that you can use on your own schedule…
  • You're studying for an international exam like TOEFL or IELTS...

If so, then you know how difficult it is to take the crucial leap from 'intermediate' to 'proficient'

We know that you need to be more than just “intermediate” if you want to:

  • build real connections with native English speakers
  • confidently conduct business meetings in English
  • enjoy your travel to English-speaking countries
  • experience movies, music and books the way they were meant to be enjoyed

We also know that there are a lot of ineffective tools aimed at the intermediate learner:

  • Gamified apps that teach you words, but not how to use them in a real context
  • Quick “tips and tricks” that you can never apply in a real situation
  • Outdated or ineffective teaching tools that aren’t applicable to real life today
  • Teachers that focus too much on correctness and not enough on true language versatility
  • Online courses taught by non-native speakers looking to make some quick money

Say goodbye to all that….

Introducing Plain English Plus

Plain English Plus is the most innovative resource for building your confidence, expanding your vocabulary, improving your accent, and learning about the world in English.

Here is how you will turbocharge your learning with Plain English Plus:

Explore the world in English twice a week

Every Monday and Thursday, we release a new lesson about a relevant modern topic: current events, politics, technology, travel, food, music, movies—things we care about. Listen to the lesson, follow along with the transcript, and broaden your English vocabulary.

Train your ear with slow and fast lessons

Use the slow version to make sure you understand every word, test your pronunciation, and grasp the concepts. Use the fast version to see how natives really speak the same words: study the connected speech, the inflection, and the real-time pronunciation of groups of words.

Never get lost with our instant translations

Just hover your mouse over a highlighted word in the transcript and see the translation into your language. Focus first on understanding and enjoying the content—then go back and study the words you didn’t understand later. Pausing the audio kills the momentum—never do that again!

Actually remember the words you learn with our Quizlet flash cards

The problem with most flash cards and vocabulary exercises is that you have no reason to remember those words, so—guess what?—you don’t remember them. That’s why we give you five flash cards for each episode, and the words are tied to the lesson content so you have a reason to remember them.

Learn to express yourself with grammar lessons

Language is full of small little tools you need to express yourself and communicate like a native. To really sound like a native, you need to build your English toolbox. Watch our video explanations of one language technique per episode. We call it our “language toolbox” and it will help you speak and write English like a native.

Discover the best high-tech language learning tools & techniques in our mini-courses

Each month, you’ll get a new video course showing you a high-tech way to practice your English. Don’t waste your time on all the useless hype you see on the Internet. Let us show you the best ways to use free and low-cost resources to your advantage.

Best of all, our lessons are all about topics relevant to our lives today— things you can talk about NOW:

  • Making New Year’s resolutions
  • Leading a zero-waste lifestyle
  • Ridesharing around the world
  • The latest 5G networks
  • The politics of Brexit (or Bolsonaro)
  • Traveling to Toronto
  • Newest flavor of Coca-Cola
  • Organizing with Marie Kondo

…and literally dozens of other lessons about business, technology, travel, music & movies, politics, and much more!

Who should join Plain English Plus?

We know that Plain English Plus is an investment—not just of money, but of time. That’s why we want to make sure that we’re a good fit for you. Before you invest in Plain English Plus, consider this:

Plain English Plus is FOR:

  • English learners who are serious about investing time in themselves to improve for business, travel, or education. We provide the tools, but you will be doing the work!
  • Learners who are tech-savvy and want to learn the best English learning tools on the Internet—and who aren’t afraid to try something new
  • Advanced learners who already know a lot of words, but want to perfect their pronunciation and sound like a native speaker
  • Lapsed English speakers who want to recover the abilities they may have lost over time
  • Learners who can understand written text but struggle with full-speed speech in movies and TV shows

Plain English Plus is NOT FOR:

  • Introductory learners who want to learn numbers, colors, place-names, and basic vocabulary
  • People chasing quick tips and tricks without making an investment in time
  • Anyone expecting “guaranteed results.” We don’t guarantee English outcomes—and you shouldn’t buy from anyone who does.
  • Anyone looking to share Internet memes or engage in idle chit-chat in English. Plain English Plus is about substantive, real topics. We go in-depth every week!

The speed and ability to read along is great

I’ve just discovered Plain English because I was looking for classes on Spotify. I studied English in the past, but I still have problems speaking and listening. Plain English is better than I expected! The slow speed and the ability to read the content are great. I’ll continue listening!

Guillermina D. , Argentina

For me, listening to Plain English is helping me to learn about many subjects and improve my vocabulary. It's really good, it's easy, it's simple, it's Plain English! Listening to slower English helps us understand better.

Incredible opportunity to improve

Your job is amazing! It’s really helping me a lot, and I am very blessed that we live in this time when we have so many options to study and improve our English. I always listen to you in the car on the way to work. The topics are great. There are lots of themes that I discuss with my wife or friends. I’m going to be in your audience for a long time! I told all of my ex college mates about this incredible opportunity to improve themselves.

Máté Sz. , Hungary

Changed my life!

I just want to say THANK YOU A LOT! I have been listening to your podcast since 2018 and my vocabulary and my pronunciation of the words have improved a lot. I'm so happy because I found your podcast and it changed my life.

Liliana , Mexico

Improved 0% to 100%!

I’ve been listening to Plain English for 4-5 months. In that time I’ve improved my English from 0% to 100%! I just want to say thank you to Plain English and Mr. Jeff. I listen while driving. Thank you!

Virendra S. , India

Discover news & info

I listen to Plain English on Spotify and I really liked the episode that deals with the zero waste lifestyle. Thanks for the podcast! I can improve my English and discover information and news from all around the world.

Justine C. , France

Incomparable to anything!

I've listened to Plain English for 2 months now. I was searching something I could listen to while driving to work, which usually takes me about an hour, half of which I'm stuck in a traffic (love Kracow's streets in the mornings!). Since I've found this podcast, the traffic is much more bearable :) The accent! I love American accent. Lots of English podcasts are run by the British - of course I've got nothing against them, but I simply prefer the American accent to listen to :) Plain English is incomparable to anything! Really, there are a lot of English podcasts on Spotify, but none of them is as interesting and comprehensible as Plain English.

Ania , Poland

I love it and I recommend it!

I discovered Plain English a few weeks ago and I am fascinated listening to each episode. In addition to being able to maintain and improve my level of English, I am very pleased because I can also learn about different topics. The topics are covered with a lot of professionalism, which shows that Jeff clearly studies each of the topics discussed. Plain English is great! I love it and I recommend it.

Marcelo Hector Gonzalez , Argentina

Great vibes!

Really awesome! I discovered the podcast around one or two months ago and since then I've been listening every week. I usually listen when I'm going to work at the courthouse in the car (I'm a lawyer). The topics, the explanations and the "vibes" of Jeff and JR are really cool. In my opinion Plain English is the best because in a few minutes it gives us one good listening exercise plus the explanation of a phrasal verb, plus the very good option of the song of the week.

Francisco López Simpson , Argentina

By listening to Plain English, I can comment on almost anything

I changed jobs about a year ago and now work a lot with Irish colleagues. I started at a very low level, but by listening to Plain English all the time, I can now understand everything and can really comment on almost anything relatively well. Your podcast has helped me a lot and I’ve come from almost 0 to a great level within a year. Thank you for everything; you are really great!

Lars A. , Germany

I did better than I needed to on an exam

I’m here to thank the whole Plain English crew (Jeff and JR). In order to get my master’s, I must show a proficiency certification. I studied hard for months to take this test. I took it last month and did even better than I needed to. The practice I got from Plain English played an important role in my success on this test, especially where I had to listen to conversations and lectures and answer questions. I’ll keep on listening to keep up my skills. Thank you!

Thomás V. , Brazil

The best thing I have ever done to learn English

Listening to Plain English has been the best thing I have ever done to learn English. I used to get frustrated when listening to native speakers and because I didn't understand a thing, since it was faster than my listening skills. So, listening to Plain English at a slower velocity helps me to get confident to continue to learn English. I could nominate one hundred reasons why I think Plain English is my favorite podcast, but here are some: the audio and information quality, the interaction with the listeners, the extra info we get on email. It's possible to feel the effort that Jeff and JR put in Plain English to achieve all of it. I love how we can interact with them, either by commenting on the website or sending a message on Whatsapp.

Who are Jeff and JR anyway?

Jeff, narrator

From: Connecticut, United States

Lives in: Chicago, United States

JR, producer

From: Veracruz, Mexico

Lives in: Montreal, Canada

Hi, we’re Jeff (on the left) and JR (on the right). Jeff is from the United States and is learning Spanish. JR is from Mexico and is learning English (and now French!). Together, we produce the Plain English podcast, a free online audio program for English learners. And now, we’re excited to launch Plain English Plus, for those of you who are ready to take your English learning to the next level.

We each know the struggles of learning languages. We’ve spent hundreds of hours searching the Internet for the best language-learning tools and resources. Between us, we’ve tried a lot of sites, courses, apps (oh, the apps!), and tutoring. Unfortunately, we were always left wanting more.

So, we created what we always wanted as learners.

That’s when we decided to create the resource we always wanted when we were learning a new language. The result is Plain English Plus and we’re excited to open it up to you!

What makes us different?
